科羅拉多大學是美國著名研究類型大學, 有數位諾貝爾獎獲得者.其結構工程在世界上有很高的聲譽。 席云平是目前該學科大陸旅美華人最活躍的學者之一。 歷任美國土木工程師協會工程力學分會材料性能委員會主席(2003.10 – 2006.10)，美國科羅拉多大學土木環境及建筑工程系結構實驗室主任 ，美國科羅拉多州公路系統技術協助中心主任，美國土木工程師協會《工程力學》雜志副主編 (2003.10 - 2006.10)，國際性雜志《計算機在混凝土中的應用》編委會委員 ，國際性雜志《混凝土科學和工程》(RILEM)編委會委員，美國國家科研基金會科羅拉多大學地震研究中心(NSF NEES center at Univ. of Colorado at Boulder) 顧問委員會委員，國際混凝土徐變協會指導委員會委員， 科羅拉多大學土木環境及建筑工程系執行委員會(executive committee ) 委員 ，科羅拉多大學工學院科研委員會委員，科羅拉多大學結構工程及結構力學教研室負責人 (2002-2003)，科羅拉多大學土木環境及建筑工程系教學大綱編委會委員 (1999-2001)。

主要研究方向：建筑材料長期耐久性的理論分析和試驗、結構長期性能的監測和模擬、發展新型混凝土, 新型耐火高強混凝土材料, 廢棄物的循環應用。自1993年在美任教以來，已主持完成了70余項科研項目，總計經費六百余萬美元.
